How to convert iTunes songs (music) into ringtone for iPhone

By

GUIDE

***UPDATE***

To further clarify the process, I have uploaded a video explaining the process.

Follow the appropriate link:

_________________________________________________________________

There are two different ways to convert music to ringtone.

Tools needed: iTunes and surely a music file!

OS: Mac OSX, XP and Vista.

1. Music that contains DRM and is bought through iTunes:

-Right click on the music in iTunes and select “Convert to Ringtone”.

2. Music not bought through iTunes:

Note: XP and Vista users click on “Properties” instead of “Get info”

-Right click on the music in iTunes and select “Get info”

-Go to “Options” tab

-Select “start time” and “stop time”

-Input a value for both intervals (Interval should not excede 40 secs)

-Click ok and close “Get info” window

-Now right click on that music again and select “Convert to AAC”

-Now you should find same music name file in itunes but with different length.

-Drag that file on to your desktop

-Delete the new AAC file from iTunes

-On your desktop, rename the extension from “.m4a” to “.m4r” of the file that was just dragged

-Drag the file back into iTunes library.

It should now show up in ringtone section. Just sync your iPhone and voila! If you run into any problems, just leave a comment and I will get back to you.

UPDATE

HANNNAH BISHOP

to chang a file from an m4a to a m4r you have to make sure that it shows m4a in the file name if it does not then do this.

Control panel > Appearance and themes > folder options > view > uncheck hide extensions for known

then click ok

rename file from: FILENAME.m4a to FILENAME.m4r

double click file and it should pop up in the ringtones section. sync your iphone and it should work.

Kevin Haworth

For those who are getting it to show up in iTunes under your ringtones folder of your library and your iPhone ringtones tab in iTunes, but NOT showing up on your iPhone try the following.

1) Go to your ringtones tab in iTunes with your phone plugged in. Select to NOT sync any of your ringtones.

2) Sync your phone (this will remove any current ringtones that might be messing up the process)

3) Next go into your iTunes library and make sure that any .m4a versions of the song are deleted. IMPORTANT: If your original version of the song was an .m4a, create an mp3 version (follow similar steps as in the OP, but convert to mp3 instead). Make sure that when you create the mp3, you create it for the WHOLE song before deleting or else you will lose your song!

4) Once you have deleted all of the .m4a versions, go back to the ringtones tab and select to sync all of your ringtones (or selected ringtones with the appropriate boxes check, however you normally have it set).

5) You should now see the ringtone appear in on your phone.

The issue seems to be that the phone would get confused if there were both .m4r and .m4a versions of a song that you were trying to put on your phone. So my solution is to delete any .m4a versions.

Porsche

Love it!! Thanks a bunch for this. I followed all the steps and it worked a treat.

To convert the .m4a version to the .m4r version you have to:

1) Change your folder options by going to "My Computer"

2) Click on "View" and then uncheck the "Hide extension for known file types"... apply and ok it

3) Then right click the .m4a version on your desktop, go to "Properties". You should now be able to edit the file.

4) Click Save, you'll notice that the Itunes symbol has now change to ringtone

5) Open up the file from your desktop and DONE!

Now just click and drag it to your Iphone... it comes up in your "Sound Settings" as a "Custom" Ringtone instead of a "Purchased" one.

:D

I've just answered my own question! I just had to go to "File" then "Add to library" and the new .m4r file was added to my ringtone directory. THANKS A MILLION!!

When I add the file back to the library it adds to the original folder, not to the ringtone folder. Also, the extension is being renamed .m4r, but it's not actually changing the file format. Is this the problem? Please e-mail me at bpzeig@charter.net. Thanks

RE: Problems with renaming extension to .m4r

You have to make your computer display the extensions for all files. I can't remember how I did this, but I guess I went to Control Panel and somehow selected "Show extensions" or something like that. Then, just edit ".m4a" to ".m4r"

Jen 3 years ago

RE: Iain Clakr - Unable to drag to iPhone

After following the steps listed above, the new ringtone was in my iTunes Ringtones library. Then, I did a full Sync of my iPhone in order to get the new ringtone on my phone.

I followed the steps and like many others got stuck with changing the .m4a into an .m4r format, Jen you're a genius! For anyone else who's had the same problem go to 'control panel' - search: 'file extensions' - click 'Folder options (show or hide file extensions) - deselect the box 'hide extensions for known file types' - then when you go back to the file properties you can change it to a .m4r! Magic! Thanks Jen!

You need to go to folder options in my computer and select the view tab. Then uncheck the hide extensions for known file types then all your files will show the 3 extension letters and you can change them to whatever you want. ie m4r in this case.

After you've renamed the file extension to m4r, make sure you've deleted the AAC file from your itunes library BEFORE you try to drag your ringtone (new file) from your desktop to your ringtones library in itunes. After you've added to your ringtones library, then sync..

Retrodog 2 years ago

I was able to rename the .m4a to .m4r file and was able to add it to my ringtones directory in itunes but when i sync the phone is says "phone cannot be synced the required disk cannot be found"

I did delete the AAC file and made sure the clip was less than 40 seconds. unless apple wised up to this trick i am out of options to try

itunes version 9.0.2.25

iphone 3gs 3.1.2

Lou 2 years ago

Awesome. For all the guys that couldn't get it to work, just keep trying. I tried it twice and couldn't get it to appear in ringtones but when i tried for the third time there it was. Just keep trying I say. Certainly beats paying! Cheers muchly. The easiest way to get it in if it won't drag is go via "file" and import it from your desktop.

I am using iphone 4 and itunes 9.2.1.5.

I realised for people who were unable to sync ringtones to your iphone, here are a few steps which could solve the problem (works for me, so i'm just sharing):

- Do the format conversion as mentioned in the above article.

- Connect your iphone to your computer via USB cable that comes with your iphone.

- Your iphone should sync with itunes and under 'Devices' on the left panel of itunes program, click on your iphone.

- You will arrive at the 'Summary' page that displays infomation of your iphone

- Go to 'Ringtones' tab

- Check the 'Sync Ringtones' box

- There, you will be able to choose if you wish to sync 'all ringtones' or 'selected ringtones'

- Choose your ringtones

- Once you are done, click 'Apply' on the right hand corner

- The ringtones should be synced to your iphone.

Hope this helps. :)

sheila 18 months ago

Hi everyone,

i have followed all the steps and got unlimited ringtones in ring tone folder.

However i was having problems initially in that i could get the files converted and get them into my library ring tone folder but could not get them into the folder on my phone. What I did was to clear my phone of music completely and start again as I found i had ring tones in my song folder along with the main song. After that i followed the steps below and once you have done it a few times it is really easy. I will try to put them altogether here for anyone having trouble.

go to itunes library - this is important as if you are not in the library it is impossible to delete the AAC file a necessary step to success.

choose song

r/click choose get info and open

choose the options tab (here you will find how to choose the length of your track

tick start and choose 0 (or the postion you want to start your song from)

tick end and choose 0:40 ( or start time plus 40 if you are not starting track from beginning of song)

click ok (box will close)

click on song and choose create AAC file

you will see a new file below your song same name but it will now be a 40 seond length

Drag this file to your desk top

Ensure you have done the following on your computer

to allow you to see file extensions.

1) Change your folder options by going to "My Computer"

2) Click on "View" and then uncheck the "Hide extension for known file types"... apply and ok it

the file you have dragged to your desktop will have .m4a at the end rename the file .m4r click yes to the question this may change the format of your file.

NOW IMPORTANT STEP - GO BACK TO LIBRARY R/CLICK ON THE aac FILE (SHORT SONG) THAT YOU JUST CREATED AND DELETE IT - SEND IT TO THE RECYCLE BIN.

go back to .m4r file on desk top and drag it into your itunes library (this is in the left pane at the top)

Now click on ring tones in your library and you will see the ring tone you just created is in there.

IMPORTANT NEXT STEP

connect your iphone via usb

then click on your phone's icon in devices

this opens a summary window about your phone

choose the ringtones tab and this will show an option to SYNC ringtones

choose selected ring tones and tick the ring tones you want to transfer to your phone

click apply

your ring tones will now sync to your phone - to check go to settings

then sounds

then ring tone

you will now see your custom ring tones at the top of the standard ring tones.

Hope it helps to have the info altogether .

Huge 18 months ago

I've got the song on my desktop but I'm unsure what you mean by renaming it, where do I rename it?

Munch 18 months ago

Great I now have my fav ringtone back, thanks for the info :-)

LEB 18 months ago

It does work. Only issue is seems my originally puchased song, although 3 minutes long originally, still shows 3 minutes, but plays only the segment (18 seconds) I trimmed to for the ringtone. Said another way, my original song has been edited. Thanks for the tutorial.

LEB 18 months ago

Correction: Original song is OK. Becuase of instructions to go to info and choose your section of the song you want for a ringtone (e.g., 0:14 to 0:30), the next time you play the song, that selected segment of time, in my case, remained in effect. Go to info again and un-check start and stop times.....the song now plays completely. My mistake; apologies for the false alert

Vivian 18 months ago

Wow! Thanks so much for posting. It's unbelievable that Apple doesn't make things easier for its users. On Android phones you just click on the song from the phone and it gives you the option to "Use as Ringtone." But I guess for Apple that would mean users spending less money buying expensive ringtones and/or ringtone making apps.

B.McC 17 months ago

F@!*^%£ing excellent and so easy. Thanks a lot cyberman

Cheers

Natasha 17 months ago

I did all of the above no trouble then noticed on syncing that the ringtone did not appear in the iphone, I resolved this issue by dragging the ringtone onto the iphone within itunes and now it is there. Try this if you have the same. I noticed some actual purchased songs could not be altered length wise so I stuck to stuff I already had on my pc.

justahelper 17 months ago

hey,

All of you havin trouble in changing the .m4a to .m4r

you need to go into control panel, folder option, "view" tab, uncheck the "hide extensions for known file types" box.

now you should see the extensions of all you files... just rename the file and change the type... easy.

then for the first one add it in itunes via the file, add file. then it will make a new folder called ringtones

Hey peeps, many of you can see the file in the ring tones section of i tunes. Just make sure before you sync the phone you have ticked the sync ringtones option on i tunes. The option for (ringtones) can be found when you click on your device and then the sub headings come across the top of the i tunes screen. Hope this helps.

any help?

P.K 17 months ago

Hey guys, I had the same problem with converting the .m4a to .m4r thing. It means you didn't show your file extension. So to do that, go to Control Panel> Folder Options> View> UNCLICK "Hide extensions for known type files" and then "OK" and then go back to your song to see if it shows ".m4a" if it does, then you may proceed to changing it to ".m4r" I hope this helped!

iPhone4 - Windows 7 (64bit) - iTunes ver 10.

Works for me... tks matie...!!!

I just DL an mp3 ( 21sec long ) file in my PC.

For file conversion you need the above program on this webpage.

For renaming, you need to follow exactly as described above ( expose first the file extension..!!!).

-Drag or copy that file in the Ringtone folder of iTunes.

-I ticked then the file in that folder.

-Sync then the iPhone in iTunes

In my iPhone :

Select Settings->Sounds->Ringtone

There you will see the new file in the CUSTOM window.

Select that new file...

Happy End..?...?..?

This drove me nuts, but it finally worked!

For those that go through all the steps, but then cannot access the ringtone on the iphone after you try to sync:

Hook your phone up to your computer. Open the iPHONE folder, then RINGTONES folder (within iphone folder) copy m4r ringtone from desktop and paste it into iphone ringtones folder (not just iphone, and not just the regular itunes ringtone folder. Hope this makes sense. There are two ringtones folders once you hook up your phone. Regular itunes, and iphone. You want the iphone ringtone.

Enjoy!
